Advocacy can feel frustrating, but staying silent isn’t an option—one educator reflects on the power of speaking up for students, colleagues, and the future of public education.

The power of one voice shouldn’t be underestimated.

In spite of attacks, in spite of our differences, I would say it is more important than ever for us to stick together—as a family might. “We must become cousins now,” at least in sharing a common purpose.

"If we, as teachers, do not step up to advocate for our students and profession, others will make decisions for us, often without understanding the real impact of those choices."

The passage of H.B. 267 by the Utah House of Representatives undermines union rights and challenges democratic principles by restricting their ability to negotiate for students, educators, and public education.

Educators must amplify their voices by sharing compelling stories and advocating for change to ensure their perspectives shape the future of public education.

The Utah Education Association (UEA) has been instrumental in demystifying the legislative process for me, fostering an environment where even those who may feel apprehensive can actively contribute to shaping policies that impact our schools and students.

Being affiliated with a political party doesn't mean that lawmakers—or you, for that matter—are either heroes or adversaries. Serving as a policy ambassador helped me dismantle the stereotypes I had formed about lawmakers.

Engaging with local legislators is not merely a civic duty; it is an opportunity to ensure our voices are acknowledged, our concerns are addressed, and our democracy flourishes. Let's actively connect with those shaping Utah's future, fostering a more informed, inclusive, and responsive political landscape in our state.
