Your Voice Matters

The Utah Education Association (UEA) has been instrumental in demystifying the legislative process for me, fostering an environment where even those who may feel apprehensive can actively contribute to shaping policies that impact our schools and students.

As a school counselor specialist and proud Policy Ambassador for the 2024 Utah Legislative Session, I have the privilege of witnessing the unwavering commitment of educators who tirelessly work to nurture the holistic development of our students. From addressing mental health crises to guiding them toward college and career readiness, educators play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our communities. It is this dedication that propels me to advocate for increased collaboration between experienced educators, families, researchers, and policymakers to build a stronger foundation for our state.

One area that demands our attention is the pivotal role of school counselors in promoting mental health and guiding students toward their future paths. We, as educators, are acutely aware of the challenges our students face, and it is our duty to advocate for the resources and support necessary to effectively address mental health concerns. By doing so, we not only prioritize the well-being of our students but also contribute to building a community that values mental health and emotional resilience.

The Utah Education Association (UEA) has been instrumental in demystifying the legislative process for me, fostering an environment where even those who may feel apprehensive can actively contribute to shaping policies that impact our schools and students. The legislative process is not as daunting as it seems, and every educator has a valuable perspective to share. By recognizing ourselves as experts in our respective fields, we can bridge the gap between the classroom and the Capitol.

The Utah Education Association has proven to be an invaluable resource in preparing educators to engage with the legislative process. By offering guidance and breaking down the complexities, the UEA empowers educators to become advocates for positive change. I was able to meet with my state senator and explain the benefits and cost savings that school counselors can provide to our overburdened Behavioral Health system and how supporting UEA priorities can help achieve this.

In receiving the opportunity as a Policy Ambassador, I have come to realize the importance of educators speaking out and actively participating in the legislative process. Utah needs the insights of those on the front lines, those who witness the daily struggles and triumphs of students, to inform policies that will truly make a positive impact. As a community, we have the collective responsibility to advocate for the well-being of our students, and this can only be achieved by coming together.

Moreover, the focus on college and career readiness with mental health support is paramount for the future success of our students. School counselors play a crucial role in guiding students through this journey, helping them navigate complex decisions and providing valuable insights. It is imperative that our legislators recognize the significance of this role and allocate the resources needed to support a K-12 school counseling program. This will allow students to receive early and valuable support that will help them better take advantage of their education.

I urge fellow educators to embrace the opportunity to become active participants in future Utah legislative sessions. By partnering with families and advocating for the needs of our students, we can contribute to building a better community. We can make a difference and ensure a brighter future for the students and families we so tirelessly serve.
