Why Stay a Union Member? Because Our Fight Isn’t Over

HB267 is a setback, but now is the time to engage, not walk away.

The passage of HB267 had a colleague ask me, “So why stay a union member now?” It’s a valid question, especially when it feels like our voices weren’t heard. However, viewing union membership solely through the lens of collective bargaining overlooks its vital role.

Our union provides essential protections: liability insurance, legal support, and professional development. It’s also our strongest advocate for quality public education, fighting against harmful legislation and for better learning environments.

Yes, politics affects us all, even if we’re not actively involved. That’s why we need our union as a watchdog. But we can’t just watch. We need to participate.

This bill highlights the urgency of understanding and influencing legislation. Even small actions: contacting representatives, attending meetings, and staying informed make a difference. Our union offers resources to help us navigate this. Let’s attend meetings, join committees, and get involved.

It’s tough when things don’t go our way, but now isn’t the time to quit.

As Frederick Douglass said, “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” Let’s stay informed, united, and actively shape our future. Let’s turn frustration into action and demand better.
