Policy Ambassadors

Policy isn’t just for Politicians

Decisions about students should be guided by the people who teach them.

Before becoming a policy ambassador, I assumed the legislative process was something that happened to educators, not with us. I pictured polished lobbyists, complicated bills and conversations I would not know how to enter.

What I have learned instead is that lawmakers genuinely need and often want our voices in the room.

One of the biggest takeaways for me has been realizing how much impact a teacher’s perspective can have. When we share real classroom experiences, student needs or unintended consequences of a policy, it reframes the conversation in a powerful way.

A bill is no longer abstract when you can explain how it affects a student who relies on school meals, mental health supports or flexible credit options to graduate.

You do not need to be a policy expert to get involved. You just need to be willing to ask questions, learn as you go and speak honestly about what you see every day in schools. The legislative process can feel intimidating, but it is far more accessible than I ever expected.

If you have ever felt frustrated by decisions being made without educator input, this is your invitation. Our voices matter, and they are strongest when we use them together!
