UEA History

For more than 165 years, Utah educators have worked together to strengthen their profession, improve public schools and advocate for students.
1860

Utah educators organize

Utah educators formed the Deseret School Teachers’ Association to promote the educational interests of the community.
1910

A statewide association takes shape

The organization incorporated as the Utah Educational Association, creating a more formal statewide professional association for educators and strengthening its relationship with the National Education Association.
1914-1925

Teachers and families organize together

The Utah Education Association’s Patrons Section became the state’s primary parent-teacher organization, bringing educators and families together around children’s education and well-being. By 1924, the network included 14 district associations and 230 local school groups.
1924

The Utah Education Association is named

The organization formally adopted the name Utah Education Association, reflecting its growing role as the statewide voice of Utah’s professional educators.
1925

Utah PTA begins a new chapter

At UEA’s annual convention, Utah’s parent-teacher organization formally joined the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, now known as National PTA. This marked the transition from UEA’s Patrons Section to a distinct statewide Utah PTA, continuing a partnership between educators and families that remains essential to strong public schools.
1963

Educators take a historic stand

UEA members participated in a two-day statewide educator walkout amid a major dispute over school funding. The action drew national attention to the needs of Utah’s public schools and demonstrated the power of educators speaking together.
2007

Utah voters reject private school vouchers

UEA helped lead a successful statewide referendum overturning a universal private school voucher law. Utah voters chose to keep public funds focused on public education.
2025

UEA defends public education funding

UEA and other plaintiffs challenged Utah’s private school voucher program. On April 18, 2025, the Third District Court ruled it unconstitutional. The state appealed, and UEA continues defending public funds for public schools.
2025

Utah workers preserve collective bargaining

UEA members helped lead the Protect Utah Workers coalition after HB 267 ended collective bargaining rights. More than 5,000 volunteers gathered over 320,000 signatures, and the Legislature repealed the law in December 2025.
