Lawmakers expected to repeal controversial labor union law

What does it mean for UEA members?

Key Takeaways

  1. Your local association can continue collaborating with your school district, representing public educator interests in compensation, working conditions, benefits, professional licensing and student instructional materials.
  2. The UEA can continue to represent public educator concerns, including protecting prep time, addressing class sizes, and supporting safer, more stable schools for our students and our members.
  3. Our union remains a strong, united voice for public education and the professionals who make it work every day.

During the upcoming special legislative session this week, the Utah Legislature is expected to vote in favor of a full repeal of HB 267 Public Sector Labor Union Amendments. The Utah Education Association and our 20 union partners in the Protect Utah Workers coalition support the anticipated repeal.

The expected repeal of HB 267 is because of you. UEA members helped lead the coalition of 5,000 volunteers who collected more than 320,000 signatures in 30 days to defend workers’ rights. You had the conversations, you stood in the snow with clipboards, you talked with colleagues, neighbors, and strangers. The Legislature’s decision to repeal this law will be proof that when public educators stand together, we are powerful.

This moment shows what “member-led, member-driven” really means. Lawmakers responded to the collective strength of Utah’s public workers, including thousands of UEA members who insisted that decisions about our workplaces must include the people who actually work in public schools.

What does the expected repeal mean for you?

  • Your local association can continue collaborating with your school district, representing public educator interests in compensation, working conditions, benefits, professional licensing and student instructional materials.
  • The UEA can continue to represent public educator concerns, including protecting prep time, addressing class sizes, and supporting safer, more stable schools for our students and our members.
  • Our union remains a strong, united voice for public education and the professionals who make it work every day.

The anticipated repeal is a powerful reminder of the strength of solidarity.
