Hello! My name is Mary Morgan, and I teach in the Park City School District. My career in Utah began in 1998 as an elementary music specialist. Over the past 25+ years, I have taught elementary music, middle school band and choir, and high school choir. Throughout my time in Park City, I’ve been an active member of the Park City Education Association (PCEA), serving on several committees, including the negotiations teams for both compensation and our PCEA Licensed Professional Agreement. Since 2021, I have also served as Co-President of PCEA, and starting in July 2024, I will take on the role of Eastern UniServ President for UEA.
Being a part of the Member Organizers team has been crucial in helping grow our membership here in Park City. Through this program, I have gained valuable insights into various ways to support teachers and highlight the importance of our association. By communicating and meeting with other member organizers, I’ve learned new strategies and shared what has worked and what hasn’t. This collaboration has allowed us to exchange ideas and helped me grow tremendously as a leader.
Focusing on helping and supporting each other, particularly with new members, strengthens our membership and our "why." Why do we belong to this association? Why are we passionate about what we do? What impact does that have on both our students and our teachers? The work we do every day directly influences our students, and we fight for what is right, not only for ourselves but also for our youth. The Member Organizers program has reinforced this by helping us bring in new members who share that same passion for the profession.
In Park City, through our grant proposal for the 2024-2025 school year, we plan to continue building relationships with both new and seasoned members. We will use the grant money to support our New Teacher Orientation in August 2024, helping us connect with new hires and offering support throughout the year. Additionally, we plan to engage with our current members while attracting teachers who have been part of our schools but are not yet members.
Having participated in the Member Organizers program, I can now put the funding and training we received into action with fresh ideas and a positive direction. I am incredibly grateful for this program and would like to thank UEA and William Spiegel for giving me this opportunity. I am a better leader because of it.
Thank you!
