UEA-Political Action Committee

We need to elect champions who will fight for our neighborhood public schools.
Cardboard sign raised above group of people reads, "Fight today for a better tomorrow."

UEA-PAC is the most powerful tool our association has to protect public schools.

Political decisions affect our classrooms, jobs, students, and families. Our association faces unprecedented attacks, and our profession and funding are under constant threat; we can't afford to sit on the sidelines.

UEA's political action committee (PAC) uses money voluntarily contributed to elect pro-public education school boards, state representatives and senators, and governors. Join thousands of fellow Utah educators who contribute monthly to UEA-PAC and make your voice heard!

The Politics of Public Education

Elected officials make decisions that impact teachers on a daily basis. From funding decisions to working conditions, public policymakers make political decisions that have very real consequences in the classroom. Therefore, the UEA takes a leadership role in urging the Utah State Legislature and State Board of Education to prioritize public school funding, promote quality teaching and learning, and ensure that school employees are valued and respected.

What is UEA-PAC?

Founded as the nation’s first educator political action committee in 1964, the Utah Education Association Political Action Committee (UEA-PAC) is the political arm of the UEA. Since absolutely no UEA member dues are used for political parties or candidates, UEA-PAC allows educators to have a voice in political issues affecting children and public education. UEA-PAC is directed and run by classroom teacher members from throughout the state. Chaired by the UEA President, the UEA-PAC Executive Council has bi-partisan representatives from each local UniServ and the UEA Board of Directors.

What We Do

UEA-PAC educates UEA members on political issues, identifies candidates who align with UEA's legislative priorities, and supports these candidates through funding and other resources. UEA-PAC collaborates with both major political parties and uses data to guide its candidate screening and campaign efforts. Local associations and UniServ units have their own PACs that support local candidates, including school board members.

UEA-PAC Recommendation Process

The UEA-PAC is committed to electing candidates who champion public education, regardless of political affiliation. Under the leadership of the UEA Board of Directors and the UEA House of Delegates, UEA-PAC ensures that education-friendly candidates are supported across all levels of government.

Candidate Recommendation Process

The UEA-PAC operates a rigorous and transparent process for endorsing candidates. Legislative candidates are interviewed by local association PACs, who then submit recommendations to UEA-PAC. For statewide offices and Utah State Board of Education positions, UEA-PAC conducts the interviews and makes recommendations directly.

How Candidates Qualify for UEA-PAC Endorsement

To be considered for endorsement, candidates must:

  • Complete a comprehensive questionnaire.
  • Participate in an interview process.

Incumbent legislative candidates who earned a 100% rating on the annual legislative scorecard are exempt from the questionnaire. Importantly, UEA member dues are never used to fund political campaigns, and UEA-PAC does not oppose any candidate for office.
