The UEA Applauds Gov. Cox's Support for Educators, Urges Greater Investment in Public Education

The Utah Education Association (UEA) is pleased to see Governor Spencer Cox prioritize critical investments in education, including three of UEA’s top priorities:

  • Paid Professional Hours for Educators: $75 million to ensure continued funding for essential preparation and collaboration time for educators.
  • Stipends for Future Educators Pilot Program: $8.4 million to provide another year of financial support for student teachers, making the education profession more accessible.
  • Healthy School Meals Initiative: $7.1 million to expand access to no-cost meals, reducing food insecurity and supporting student success.

“We are encouraged by Governor Cox’s recognition of the need to invest in Utah’s educators and students,” said UEA President Renée Pinkney. “Programs, like paid professional hours, stipends for aspiring educators, and healthy school meals are critical steps in addressing the challenges faced by our schools.”

UEA also appreciates the thoughtful use of funds made possible by Constitutional Amendment G (2020) to provide one-time investments that support educators and students.

While these proposals are a step in the right direction, UEA urges the governor and the Utah legislature to increase the Weighted Pupil Unit (WPU) by 3% above inflation. The current proposal, which is barely above inflation, falls short of providing the necessary resources to meet the needs of students and public educators.

By working together, we can give every student and public educator the tools they need to succeed.
