Over 200 elected delegates from across Utah gathered at Shoreline Middle School in Provo for the 2025 UEA House of Delegates on May 10. The educators met to shape the policies and priorities that guide our association.

As UEA’s largest governing body, the House of Delegates made impactful decisions to advance safety, inclusion, and transparency across our Association.

Delegates voted to establish a Health and School Safety Standing Committee to ensure that members from all areas of the state—urban, suburban, and rural—have a voice in shaping safe, supportive school environments. This decision holds major significance, as it embeds school safety into UEA’s foundational documents, affirming it as a core priority of our association. By codifying the committee, UEA ensures this critical work will remain central to how we advocate, support, and protect educators and students.

As Provo Education Association President Christy Giblin said, “We want to make sure that we do our best to protect our students and each other.”

Delegates also approved:

  • The creation of an LGBTQ+ Task Force, submitted by the UEA Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee. The task force will study the needs of LGBTQ+ members, advocate for their rights, and submit legislative and policy recommendations to the UEA Board by June 2027.
  • A motion to fly the Pride flag at UEA Headquarters during the first week of Pride Month. Brett Rydalch of the Salt Lake Education Association introduced the proposal, stating, “This is not political. It’s human.” The action signals UEA’s commitment to standing against discrimination and creating inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ educators and students.
  • The development of a UEA staff flow chart and job description resource, submitted by Woodland Peaks UniServ, to help members navigate staff roles and know who to contact when questions arise.

In a close vote, delegates rejected the proposed 2025-2026 UEA budget and will reconvene on August 1 to consider an amended version.
