UEA Executive Director Mark Mickelsen retires

Mark Mickelsen retired from his position as UEA executive director on August 1 after more than 30 years as an employee advocate. He was named executive director in April 2008 following the retirement of Susan Kuziak.

Prior to becoming executive director, Mickelsen served as the UEA’s director of communications and public relations, executive director of the Jordan Education Association, and director of Northern Utah UniServ. He designed and implemented the Association’s “No Excuses! Invest in Public Schools” (TEF) campaign, which ultimately led Utah legislators to increase public education funding by more than $750 million. In 2006, he was chosen “PR Person of the Year” by the National Education Association’s PR Council of the States.

“Thank you for allowing me to be a part of an Association that is not afraid to step forward or disturb the status quo,” Mickelsen said as he gave his final address at the UEA House of Delegates. “The issues we deal with in public education are diverse and constantly changing. But the great cause that is public education reaches beyond our organization into the very fabric of society.

“Thank you for letting me be a part of your great Association,” he concluded.
The UEA Board of Directors appointed Lisa Nentl-Bloom to succeed Mickelsen as executive director.
