UEA and MediaOne partner to transform annual teachers’ convention

While it may be synonymous with a school recess for many Utahns, public school educators view the Utah Education Association convention as a place to hone teaching skills, share ideas and engage with colleagues.

Through a new partnership with MediaOne of Utah, the UEA intends to add a whole new dimension to its annual convention with expanded events and activities geared toward parents, students and others involved in education. MediaOne will be responsible for the exhibit hall and promotion of the convention – with the goal of engaging not only teachers, but also the whole community. The UEA will continue to provide professional development for educators.

“We all recognize that teaching and learning can’t just occur in the classroom,” said UEA President Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh. “By expanding the scope of our convention, we hope to provide opportunities for everyone to become more involved in the work of educating our children. We are looking forward to a fun, exciting event with a new look to celebrate public education.”

“The public has always been welcome to attend the UEA Convention, but we’ve historically focused our attention on teachers,” said UEA Director of Public Relations Mike Kelley. “Media One has a great track record of organizing fun and informative community events. We are excited about the opportunities this partnership creates.”

MediaOne produces shows such as What a Woman Wants, The Governor’s Utah Economic Summit, the , Sugar House Fireworks, Uplift Utah Families, Taste of Home and other specialty events. “This is a wonderful partnership for MediaOne to reinforce our commitment to teachers and students,” stated Marie Bowcut, MediaOne director of events. “The annual convention is an opportunity for teachers, students and families to come together in a meaningful way and make an impact on improving Utah’s strong educational foundation.”

The UEA Convention is one of the state’s longest-standing annual events, operating for well over 100 years. The 2012 UEA Convention & Education Exposition will be held Oct. 18-19 at the South Towne Exposition Center in Sandy.
