PRESS RELEASE: UEA Calls Governor’s Budget ‘Encouraging’

The Utah Education Association (UEA) is encouraged by the $63 million in additional funding for public education proposed by Utah Governor Gary Herbert in his 2011-12 budget proposal.

“We appreciate Governor Herbert’s commitment to our public schools. This money will help educate an additional 14,700 new students expected in Utah’s classrooms this fall, provide funding for extended-day kindergarten, and improve reading and math proficiency,” said UEA President Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh. “We know that the governor has to strike a balance between the needs of public education and other ongoing funding requirements. He has done just that in this budget proposal.”

The UEA supports the statement recently adopted by the Utah State Board of Education that reads, in part: “Future funding for education must increase if we are to meet the demands of a growing number of students…We must find new revenue without eliminating existing sources.”
