Dickey, Gowans Selected for Open Board Positions

The domino effect of two recent retirements led to three openings on the UEA Board of Directors. The Board appointed replacements for those positions.

Michael Gowans, president of the Alpine Education Association, was appointed to fill a vacancy created when Board member Jerry Monson was hired as director of organizing, capacity building and member benefits on the UEA state program staff. Monson replaced Carol Cremer who retired in January 2011 (see story).

Gowans will serve as a UEA Board member representing the Bonneville UniServ until a replacement is elected and assumes the position July 15.

Sue Dickey, Granite UniServ representative on the UEA Board, was appointed to fill the position of NEA State Director formerly held by Jesse DeHay. DeHay retired in January from both the UEA Board and as a counselor in Davis School District. Dickey’s appointment created a Board opening for a Granite UniServ representative. Granite Education Association Board member Carol Ferguson was apointed as her her replacement.

Four candidates filed to fill DeHay’s NEA State Director vacancy. Voting in a primary election to narrow this to two candidates was held Feb. 8 to March 8. Dickey and former Jordan Education Association President Robin Frodge were victorious in the primary.

The general UEA election begins in April. For a complete list of candidates and election information, click here.
