2019 UEA Policy Ambassadors

UEA is launching a pilot program to develop Policy Ambassadors. The goal is to: 1) help participants gain familiarity with the policymaking process in Utah and develop an understanding of education policy issues; 2) build a cohort of trained educators to speak on policy issues; and 3) allow policymakers to hear directly from educators on important policy issues.

Program Requirements:

  • Attend Ambassador training at UEA or via webinar (Jan 9 and 16, 2019 from 4:15-5:30 p.m.)
  • Research and develop talking points on an education policy issue of interest (e.g., assessment, educator evaluation, trauma-informed teaching practices, etc.).
  • Track education policy issues during the 2019 legislative session via UEA’s Under the Dome website and the Utah Legislature website.
  • Contact State Senator and State Representative on selected policy issue.
  • Attend one UEA Educator Day on the Hill meeting during the 2019 legislative session (Feb 1, 8, 15, 22, Mar 1 or 8).
  • Attend at least two House Education Committee meetings and two Senate Education Committee meetings during the 2019 legislative session (in person or online).
  • Write two brief legislative updates for UEA’s Under the Dome website describing the Ambassador experience (Feb and Mar 2019).
  • Write a one paragraph reflection on the Ambassador experience for the UEA newsletter (April 2019).
  • Report to local association AR meeting on the Ambassador experience (April or May 2019).
  • Present, as a team, one 75-minute workshop on the Ambassador experience at the UEA Leadership Academy (June 11 or 12, 2019).
  • Be willing to testify in a legislative committee hearing or speak with the media on selected policy issue.

Additional Details

  • Program runs from Jan 9, 2019 - June 15, 2019.
          Note: the 2019 legislative session runs from Jan 28 – Mar 14, 2019
  • A $250 stipend will be paid upon completion of all program activities.
  • Travel and substitute costs will be paid for mandatory in-person meetings (Educator Day on the Hill and Leadership Academy).
  • Up to 12 participants will be selected

Qualifications

  • UEA member in good standing.
  • Interest in developing a greater awareness of education policy as well as leadership and advocacy skills. No prior policy experience is required.
  • Must be able to attend the January 9 and 16, 2019 Ambassador training.
  • Application must include a letter/email of support from the local association president.
