The UEA Convention & Education Exposition is Utah’s premier education event. The UEA has been providing teacher training at its annual Convention for more than 100 years. Recent years have included activities for kids, parents and anyone interested in public education.

The 2017 UEA Convention is open to anyone interested in public education!

Regular admission is $10. For free tickets, see a public school teacher.

0-11 a.m.:
Opening Session

UEA President Heidi Matthews kicks off the Convention followed by a keynote presentation by NEA President and former Utah teacher Lily Eskelsen García, a long-time public school and association advocate at national, state and local levels.

Noon-3 p.m.: Health Screenings
Health screening exams – including cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) body fat percentage and eye screenings (for UEA members only with ticket provided at registration).

1-2:30 p.m.: ‘Hot Topics and Hot Dogs’
Join UEA’s political activists for the annual Hot Topics and Hot Dogs lunch. Mix and mingle with Utah’s political players over an informal hot dog lunch. The event is open to everyone. The lunch is free for UEA Capitol Club members or for a suggested minimum $10 on-site donation to UEA-PAC. Special appearances by NEA President Lily Eskelson García and VIP guest from the “Our Schools Now” initiative.

8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.: Targeted Track for New Educators
New Educators’ Workshop is a full-day professional workshop designed specifically for educators in their early years of teaching and for students in teacher preparation programs. Available workshops cover a variety of topics such as effective classroom management, social justice in education, innovative strategies to boost student thinking and insight and building positive relationships and parents. Lunch is provided for the first 200 participants who pre-register for the event by Oct. 13. Register online or call 800-594-8996, ext. 120.

10-11 a.m.: Keynote Session
Friday’s featured speaker is Richard Paul Evans, award winning author of the #1 best-seller “The Christmas Box” and the “Michael Vey” series. He has written 12 consecutive New York Times bestsellers and is one of the few authors in history to have hit both the fiction and nonfiction bestseller lists. As an acclaimed speaker, Evans has shared the podium with such notable personalities as former President George W. Bush, former British Prime Minister John Majors, Ron Howard, Elizabeth Dole and Bob Hope.

1-2:30 p.m.: SPECIAL EVENT: Trauma-Informed Teaching: School and Student Care
Research shows childhood trauma has direct links to student success and achievement. Join the conversation as we explore “Trauma-Informed Teaching – School and Student Care.” Develop skills in building safe environments, developing relationships and trust, and championing support for students in need.

Learning opportunities include dozens of professional development sessions designed for educators, as well as seminars and workshops to help parents with children in public schools. While there will be training opportunities on a variety of topics and interests both days, Thursday’s professional focus is on veteran teachers and Friday’s emphasis is on new educators.

The Exhibit Hall area features dozens of vendor booths, stage activities, the hands-on KUED Kids Exploration Corner and a variety of other activities. See page 10 for more information.

Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.: KUED Kids Exploration Corner
Families and educators, join KUED Kids in the Exploration Corner for hands-on educational experiences! Educators grades K-12 will take home curriculum guides and classroom lesson plan ideas from community organizations. Families will explore STEAM and Literacy  activities and meet their favorite PBS Kids characters!
