  • NEA Vice President Becky Pringle:

  • Education Policy Panel Discussion:
    Hear policymakers discuss the hot topic of education accountability. Panel members include Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes, State Senator Jim Dabakis, UEA President Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh and NEA Vice President Becky Pringle. Thursday, 2-3:30 p.m. (see more).
  • New Educator Panel Discussion:
    As you transition from student teacher to provisional teacher to veteran teacher, professional networks can help you succeed. This interactive panel discussion will share best practices to help you make the transition from surviving to thriving. Friday, 1:15-2:45 p.m. (see more).

Celebrate Utah public education at the 2015 UEA Convention & Education Exposition Thursday and Friday, October 15-16, at the South Towne Expo Center.

The 2015 Convention features not only professional development for K-12 educators but also compelling keynote speakers, a New Educators’ Workshop and hundreds of vendor booths — all this in addition to seminars and workshops for parents and a hands-on learning area for children.

Teachers, administrators, parents, students…the 2015 UEA Convention is open to everyone interested in public education!

Regular admission is $10. Free tickets will be available from public school teachers in October. (Admission free for UEA members)

Opening Session—

Lily Eskelsen GarciaUEA President Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh kicks off the Convention followed by a keynote presentation by NEA Vice President Becky Pringle, a long-time public school and association advocate at national, state and local levels.

'Hot Topics and Hot Dogs' Political Event and Lunch—

Join UEA's political activists for the exclusive annual Hot Topics and Hot Dogs lunch. Utah Governor Gary Herbert will join the group and give a brief presentation. The event is open to everyone. The lunch is free for UEA Capitol Club members or for a suggested minimum $10 on-site donation to UEA-PAC.

SPECIAL EVENT: Education Policy and Educator Accountability Panel Discussion—

How are our schools and educators evaluated? How should they be measured? Hear policymakers discuss the hot topic of education accountability. Panel members include Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes, State Senator Jim Dabakis, UEA President Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh and NEA Vice President Becky Pringle. The discussion will be of particular interest to legislators, superintendents, school board members, educators and parents. The event is open to everyone.

Keynote Session—

Friday’s opening session presenter is educator Dr. Jenny Severson who will share critical strategies to achieve an effective classroom. Learn the key elements of instruction and management that will align learners and learning and create a powerful cohesive community. Dr. Severson has a passion for teaching and learning, having worked with young students to college professors, teens to adult learners, in prisons to elite prep schools, in 47 states and 17 countries.

Targeted Track for New Educators—

New Educators’ Workshop is a full-day professional workshop at the UEA Convention designed specifically for new educators in their early years of teaching and for students in teacher preparation programs. Available workshops cover a variety of topics such as classroom management strategies, teaching and learning with iPads, strategies for children with autism, multimedia projects and dealing with stress. Lunch is provided for the first 200 participants who pre-register for the event by Oct. 9. Register online or call 800-594-8996, ext. 120.

SPECIAL EVENT: New Educator Panel Discussion—

The first few years of teaching can be daunting. As you transition from student teacher to provisional teacher to veteran teacher, professional networks can help you succeed. Seminars and Workshops—

Learning opportunities include professional development sessions designed for educators, as well as seminars and workshops to help parents with children in public schools. While there will be training opportunities on a variety of topics and interests both days, Thursday’s professional focus is on veteran teachers and Friday’s emphasis is on new educators. Teachers: to request re-licensure points, complete the License Renewal Credit Form (PDF).

The Exhibit Hall features 100+ vendor booths, two stage areas with hourly activities, the hands-on KUED Kids Exploration Corner and a variety of other activities. Other Exhibit Hall events include:

    More than 100 vendor booths will fill the Exhibit Hall, promoting products and services geared toward education and the needs of education professionals.

  • Presentation Stages—
    The Main Stage and the Equity Real Estate Classroom will feature hourly education-related workshops and entertainment.

    Win a book by shooting hoops at the “Book-A-Basket” free throw area. The Utah Jazz Bear will tip off the event Thursday. UEA members also receive a free book with ticket provided at registration.

  • Health Screenings—
    Health screening exams — including cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage and eye screenings (for UEA members only with ticket provided at registration).

  • KUED Kids Exploration Corner—
    Families and educators are invited to join KUED Kids in the Exploration Corner for hands-on experiences. Educators grades K-12 will take home curriculum guides and classroom lesson plan ideas from community organizations. Families will explore STAM and literacy activities and meet their favorite PBS Kids characters!
    • Time: Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. / Location: Exhibit Hall

UEA Booth—

Stop by the UEA Booth, located in the foyer outside the Exhibit Hall, for information about UEA membership, the UEA Political Action Committee, the Children at Risk Foundation and the UEA Retired program.

Giveaways and Drawings—

Each UEA member who attends the Convention will receive a free bag, courtesy of Chevron Fuel Your School (limited to the first 2,500 attendees). In addition, UEA members can enter to win a 7-night condo stay at one of thousands of worldwide locations (courtesy of Access Development), one of three $100 Utah Idaho Supply/Map World gift cards, or one of three $100 Donors Choose gift cards (courtesy of Chevron). To enter, UEA members must complete the “Golden Ticket” contained in the UEA Convention Program (mailed to each member) and return it to the UEA Booth in the foyer.

Free Tickets—

As always, entrance to the UEA Convention is free to UEA members. The regular admission is $10. For a free ticket, please see a public school teacher! (Teachers: Tickets were included in the UEA Convention Program mailed to each UEA member at the end of September. For additional tickets, see the UEA Association Representative in your building or call the UEA at 800-594-8996.
