Special Events for 2014

  • NEA President Lily Eskelsen Garcia:
    The former Utah teacher will provide the Opening Session keynote address. Thursday, 9:30 a.m. (see more)
  • Education Policy Panel Discussion:
    Hear how federal, state and local education policies impact classrooms and student learning from a panel of distinguished leaders, including Utah Senate President Wayne Neiderhauser and NEA President Lily Eskelsen Garcia. Thursday, 2-3:30 p.m. (see more).
  • New Educator Panel Discussion:
    Educators new to the profession share their best advice and tips for getting a new teaching career off to the right start. Friday, 1-3 p.m. (see more).

Celebrate Utah public education at the 2014 UEA Convention & Education Exposition Thursday and Friday, October 16-17, at the South Towne Expo Center.

The 2014 Convention features not only professional development for K-12 educators, but also compelling keynote speakers, a New Educators’ Workshop and hundreds of vendor booths – all this in addition to seminars and workshops for parents and a hands-on learning area for children.

Teachers, administrators, parents, students…the 2014 UEA Convention is open to everyone interested in public education!

Regular admission is $10. Free tickets will be available from public school teachers in October. (Admission free for UEA members)

Opening Session—

Lily Eskelsen GarciaUEA President Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh kicks off the Convention followed by a keynote presentation by newly elected NEA President Lily Eskelsen Garcia. The 1989 Utah Teacher of the Year began her career as a school lunch lady before earning her degree and teaching in the Granite School District. The Opening Session also features a video welcome from Utah Governor Gary Herbert.

Meet the Candidates Event and Lunch—

Mix and mingle with state and federal candidates as they address educator concerns at the Hot Topics and Hot Dogs event. Candidates from throughout the state will be available to meet during an informal hot dog lunch. The event is open to everyone. The lunch is free for UEA Capitol Club members or for a suggested minimum $10 on-site donation to U-PAC.

SPECIAL EVENT: Education Policy Panel Discussion—

Hear how federal, state and local education policies impact classrooms and student learning. Panel members include Utah Senate President Wayne Niederhauser, Governor’s Education Advisor Tami Pyfer, President-elect of the Utah School Boards Association Kristi Swett, Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the U.S Department of Education Ruthanne Buck, NEA President Lily Eskelsen Garcia and UEA President Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh. The discussion will be of particular interest to legislators, superintendents, school board members, educators and parents. The event is open to everyone.

Education Awards Banquet—

The Superstars in Education banquet features comments from KSL-TV Anchor Nadine Wimmer, dinner and award presentations. Ten educators will be presented with $1,500 as part of the UEA Excellence in Teaching Awards. The UEA will also present the UEA Honor Roll Award for outstanding service to public education and the Charles E. Bennett Human and Civil Rights Award. Cost to attend the dinner is $40 per person or $300 for table of eight. RSVP by calling the UEA at 800-594-8996.

Keynote Session—

Friday’s opening session presenter is long-time educator Dr. Ted Murcray who shares proven brain-based strategies that engage students and generate positive improvement in learning. He brings powerful teaching and learning concepts to life through his high energy, engaging presentations. Murcray taught for many years in California and Tennessee, and is currently the residing Principal at I.T. Creswell Arts Magnet Middle School.

Targeted Track for New Educators—

New Educators’ Workshop provides help and information designed especially for education students or those in their early years of teaching. Available workshops cover a variety of topics such as classroom management strategies, ethics and professionalism, iPad multimedia projects and special education solutions. Lunch is provided for the first 200 participants who pre-register for the event by Oct. 10. Register online or call 800-594-8996, ext. 120.

SPECIAL EVENT: New Educator Panel Discussion—

“What I Wish I Had Known! Tips for Surviving and Thriving in Your Early Years” features educators new to the profession sharing their best advice and tips for getting a new teaching career off to the right start.

Seminars and Workshops—

Learning opportunities include professional development sessions designed for educators, as well as seminars and workshops to help parents with children in public schools. While there will be training opportunities on a variety of topics and interests both days, Thursday’s professional focus is on veteran teachers and Friday’s emphasis is on new educators. Teachers: to request re-licensure points, complete the License Renewal Credit Form (PDF).

Exhibit Hall—

The Exhibit Hall features 100+ vendor booths, two stage areas with hourly activities, the hands-on KUED Kids Exploration Corner and a variety of other activities. Other Exhibit Hall events include:

    More than 100 vendor booths will fill the Exhibit Hall, promoting products and services geared toward education and the needs of education professionals.

  • Presentation Stages—
    The Main Stage and the Equity Real Estate Classroom, will feature hourly education-related workshops and entertainment.

    Win a book by shooting hoops at the “Book-A-Basket” free throw area. Curious George and other PBS Kids characters will tip off the event Thursday. UEA members also receive a free book with ticket provided at registration.

  • Health Screenings—
    Health screening exams – including cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (for UEA members only with ticket provided at registration).

  • KUED Kids Exploration Corner—
    Families and educators are invited to join KUED Kids in the Exploration Corner for hands-on experiences, curriculum guides, take home activities and to meet your favorite PBS Kids characters!

Giveaways and Drawings—

Each UEA member who attends the Convention will receive a free bag, courtesy of Chevron Fuel Your School (limited to the first 2,500 attendees). In addition, UEA members can enter to win prizes:

  • Grand Prize Drawing: Enter to win a Samsung tablet (courtesy of NEA GPS Network), a Bose® stereo system (courtesy of Access Development), one of three $100 Utah Idaho Supply/Map World gift cards, or one of three $100 Donors Choose gift cards (courtesy of Chevron)by completing the “Golden Ticket” contained in the UEA Convention Program mailed to each member and returning it to the UEA Booth in the foyer.
  • Early Bird Prize Drawing: Educators enter to win the Early Bird prize drawing for a $150 Visa gift card by attending Thursday’s first session (8-9:15 a.m.).

Free Tickets—

As always, entrance to the UEA Convention is free to UEA members. The regular admission is $10. For a free ticket, please see a public school teacher! (Teachers: Tickets were included in the UEA Convention Program mailed to each UEA member at the end of September. For additional tickets, see the UEA Association Representative in your building or call the UEA at 800-594-8996.)
